Matt grew up on his family's breeding farm knowing that he was always going to work with thoroughbreds. In his youth, Matt gained tremendous hands-on experience foaling, prepping and everything in between. During high school and college, Matt gained more experience working in the Internal Medicine Unit at Hagyard's Equine Medical Institute.
After attending the University of Kentucky, Matt worked for various notable horsemen along his journey to co-founding Blackwood Stables. Some of those notable horsemen include Clifford Barry at Pin Oak Stud, Bill Dwan at Castlebridge Stud in Ireland, Kentucky Derby winning trainer Graham Motion, Con Marnane of Bansha House Stables in Ireland as well as being a graduate of the Irish National Stud.
Matt's experience in North America and Europe give him a unique perspective on starting and training young horses.
Matt and his wife Jessica have three children, Eddie, Adrianna, John and the family dog and farm mascot, Diesel.
